In May 2017, Turning Setbacks into Celebrations: A Mother’s Day Story. I embarked on a heartfelt journey to organize a Mother’s Day event at the Royal Albert Palace. This decision was inspired by the resounding success of the Holi celebration I had hosted just two months earlier in March. The spark for this event came from Varsha Joshi, who suggested the idea. True to my philosophy of embracing opportunities and the inspiration I drew from the movie Yes Man, I couldn’t say no. With optimism and enthusiasm, I booked a hall with a capacity for 500 guests.

However, reality struck hard. On the day of the event, only 40 people showed up. My face turned red with embarrassment and disappointment. It felt like a personal failure, and the loss was significant. Yet, in that challenging moment, my family became my pillar of strength. My wife and kids stood by my side, and together, we faced the situation head-on.

In a stroke of brilliance, my wife suggested reaching out to adult daycare centers across New Jersey to invite all the mothers. It was a last-minute effort, but it proved to be a turning point. Since we already had food prepared for 500 people, it was more than enough to accommodate new guests. With this quick pivot, the hall began to fill with mothers, and the atmosphere transformed into one of joy and celebration.

Ashok, the owner of Royal Albert Palace, extended his kindness by offering us a discount at the last minute, easing the financial strain. The arriving guests, each contributing what they could — some $5, others $10 — filled the hall with gratitude and blessings. Their heartfelt appreciation turned what started as a disheartening event into an incredible show of community and love.

But not everything went smoothly. Jaswant of Zaveri Jewelers, our main sponsor, had committed to providing silver coins for all attendees. Seeing the initial turnout, I decided to return all his coins the next day, feeling it was the right thing to do. Unfortunately, this upset him, and I learned a valuable lesson about relationships and trust. From that day forward, I decided to work exclusively with Suhag Jewelers, who had been unwavering in their support since the Holi event. Their faith in me and my vision has remained steadfast, and they continue to stand with me to this day.

Thanks also go to Maya Jewelers, who graciously provided a diamond ring as a prize for the winning girl, and to judges Varsha and Bimal Joshi for their efforts. The DJ, Mike DJ, delivered an excellent performance, and all took less than initially promised, for which I am deeply grateful. Vendors like Anil Sharma of Mass Mutual and others also contributed to making the event memorable.

This event taught me some of the most profound lessons of my life. First, it humbled me and reminded me of the importance of trust and loyalty. Suhag Jewelers had supported me without hesitation, and I learned the value of staying true to those who stand by you. Secondly, it reinforced the power of saying yes, even when the path is uncertain. The blessings and joy that filled the room that day were a testament to the beauty of embracing challenges with an open heart.

Finally, I realized that setbacks are stepping stones to growth. While only four of my friends attended compared to the 250 who showed up for the Holi event, this experience strengthened my resolve to go bigger and stronger. It inspired me to refine my approach and focus on building lasting connections with those who truly believe in my vision.

The Mother’s Day 2017 event was far more than a gathering; it was a journey of resilience, trust, and the unwavering support of family and community. It stands as a testament to the lessons life teaches us and the incredible outcomes that can emerge when we face challenges with courage and faith.
